Under the 1966 Veterinary Surgeons
Act, Veterinary Acupuncture is determined to be an invasive technique,
and involves the diagnosis of disease. Therefore it is only legal
for veterinary surgeons to use acupuncture to diagnose and treat
conditions in animals. Vets who use VA should be properly trained
with either a qualification from the Association of British Veterinary
Acupuncturists, or one from the International Veterinary Acupuncturists
Society. All animals large or small, including birds and farm animals
can be treated with VA. Clients wishing to have their animals assessed
for VA treatment need to give their vet a Consent Form which should
be filled in and returned to Wendy Vere.
Wendy Vere has been running successful clinics using VA and Laser
Treatment in Devon, Somerset and Dorset. By arrangement with a vet,
and where there is a minimum of 6 horses, the clinic will involve
a team approach, comprising a saddler, a farrier, a chiropractor
and Wendy Vere. Wendy Vere is available for practical demonstrations
of VA for veterinary surgeons throughout the South West.
The Association of British Veterinary Acupuncturists (ABVA) runs
regular courses for veterinary surgeons at the University of Bristol's
School of Veterinary Science. These courses are usually four four
day modules with associated practical training, and they lead to
an International Veterinary Acupuncturists (IVAS) Certificate in
Veterinary Acupuncture.
